Collection: Poppy Ackroyd

Poppy Ackroyd is a London-born, classically trained composer, pianist, and multi-instrumentalist known for her intricate compositional approach and richly layered arrangements. Working primarily with piano and violin, she creates immersive pieces built entirely from the physical bodies of the two instruments, extracting melody, harmony, rhythm, and texture from bowed and plucked strings, percussive techniques, and the natural resonances of the instruments themselves.

The result is a distinctive musical language that often reveals itself gradually, with compositions that feel expansive and richly orchestrated despite their deliberately limited source. Across releases including ‘Feathers’ (2014), ‘Resolve’ (2018), ‘Pause’ (2021) and her forthcoming album ‘Liminal’, Ackroyd has continued to refine this approach. ‘Liminal’ marks a new chapter in her work, shaped by a period of personal upheaval, creative renewal, and a deepened sense of focus.

Her music has been widely used across documentary, dance, theatre, animation, and visual art projects, including collaborations with New York City Ballet and the National Theatre. In 2025, she released ‘Notes On Water’, a collaborative project completed during her father Norman Ackroyd’s final months, combining her music with new work by the renowned printmaker.

Her studio is now based in her home, backing onto ancient woodland; an environment that has become an increasingly significant influence on her recent work.
